We sometimes choose a kitten from a photograph. However, the color of the dress or the first crush do not say everything. The right choice is the one that brings together three things: a kitten in good shape, a home adapted to its needs and a transparent relationship with the breeder.
Start with your daily life
Before talking about sex or color, look at your pace of life. Are there children, other animals, regular absences or outside access? A Maine Coon is sociable and curious, but each kitten has its own temperament. Some explore immediately, others observe before coming. No profile is “best”: it must simply match your family.
Observe the kitten and its environment
A healthy young cat is attentive, moves freely and interacts at its own pace. The eyes and nose must be clean, the hair groomed and breathing quiet. It is just as useful to observe his living space: cleanliness, opportunities for play, human contact and the presence of the mother give concrete indications about his first weeks.
Ask for facts, not just promises
- Who are the parents and can we consult their pedigree?
- What health examinations and tests were carried out?
- What vaccines, treatments and documents will accompany the kitten?
- At what age does he leave and how is his arrival prepared?
- Is the breeder still available after adoption?
